In gram staining protocol, gram positive bacteria are blemished violet or dark blue. Crystal violet stain can be retained through the gram positive bacteria due to the high amount of the peptidoglycan in the cell wall. Gram-positive cell walls usually lack the outer membrane found in Gram-negative bacteria.
