You will find out how often people actually read these

Assignment

Everyday, people download new apps and use existing ones on their Smartphones. But do we really know what data these apps are tracking or what personal information we are providing to the creators of these apps?

CBC's Marketplace recently did a show where they created a free app that Canadians could download (here is the online episode https://www.cbc.ca/marketplace/episodes/2016-2017/apps). The people who downloaded the free app gave permission for the creators to access many aspects of their phone (not unlike many apps on your phone today), such as phone logs, text messages, contact lists, photos, camera, etc. By giving permission before downloading the app, Marketplace was able to see every phone call and text made, could open up a person's personal photo album, and even take pictures from a person's phone without their knowledge.

In this assignment, your goal is to research what these permissions really mean. You will find out how often people actually read these permissions or if they really understand what they mean, how much access a phone app can get based on these permissions (for Smartphones and/or other wearable devices such as Fitbit and the Apple Watch), and finally what people can do to protect themselves. You need to use peer reviewed or reputable sources to research this topic (such as papers from the ACM Library and Canada's Privacy Commission's research papers available on their website https://www.priv.gc.ca/en/about-the-opc/publications/). You should have 3-5 good references for this assignment.

You will use the ACM SIGCHI paper format available as a Word template (attached). Here is a link to a conference paper in the ACM Library that uses a similar template: (https://dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=2810127&CFID=895495174&CFTOKEN=49478466).

You will use the IEEE citation format (links to the citation format are below). Your paper is to be 2-2.5 pages, properly formatted, including references.
