The Task: Write a work of short fiction (2000-4000) words that creates the future world of Miami/your neighborhood as sea-level rises. Use the NOAA Sea Level Rise Viewer app. Enter your home address and see what it might look like when the sea rises by 6ft, 8ft, 10 ft. Write a short fiction piece about the world you see at 8ft.

Good Thinking = Good Writing
Everything in your creative short fiction must be influenced by the setting - in this case, your home/Miami at a certain level of sea level rise - your story needs to depend on it, it needs to be born from it. The characters and their conflicts, etc. need to be born of that world, too. The story can participate in other genres -- for example, apocalyptic, humorous, horror, romance -- but this too needs to be anchored in the world you create. The most important thing is that you have to ensure that the story you're telling would not be the same story in a different setting.
Include an image from this world. It could be a picture of sorts or a map. You can illustrate it, take an original photo, or create it in some other way. Please do not just pull some random file off the internet.
Do research into the science behind and probability of how and what this world will be like. Include a bibliography of these sources at the end of your story. It will make your story more compelling if you properly estimate the year, the conditions (i.e., underwater or chronic flooding), and any other environmental details related to the science of climate change and how it will specifically impact South Florida.
