Problem
Animal-assisted crisis response (AACR) can be a useful intervention approach following a crisis event and is effective under many conditions. In this assignment, you will examine research published by the National Association of Social Workers Press to learn how crisis responders apply animal-assisted crisis response tactics to natural disasters, mass violence, grief and loss, and other traumatic situations. After considering this research, you will complete a review of the findings and apply your knowledge of animal-assisted crisis response to specific crisis-related issues.
I. First, begin by reading Chapters 1, 2, and 5 in Part 1 of Animal-Assisted Crisis Response: Specialized Canine Intervention for Individuals affected by Disasters and Crises. Then select one or two other chapters of your choice to read from Part 2 of the book. For example, you may want to investigate animal-assisted crisis response in natural disasters further.
II. Next, examine the journal article "Therapy Dogs as a Crisis Intervention After Traumatic Events? - An Experimental Study," and explore the University of Florida Health webpage on Dog Therapy.
III. Finally, you will write a review on the findings and topics covered in the book, focusing on the chapters you have read. Evaluate and reflect on the research highlighted in the book, explain how professionals can use animal-assisted crisis response (AACR) as an intervention tool in diverse crisis situations, and provide a summary of how the other resources that you explored (i.e., the journal article and website) are connected to the ideas examined in the book.
