Discuss a hypothetical pregnant patient/client that you may provide care for during your future clinical rotations or in your nursing career and address her cultural beliefs/practices regarding prenatal care. Pick a patient who may have unique cultural needs such as a women who is a Jehovah's witness who is anemic, or a woman who is a vegetarian, or a woman who is incarcerated, or a woman who has a drug/alcohol addiction. How would you address her beliefs/practices? How will you implement specific practices while still maintaining current standards for prenatal care? What difficulties do you anticipate? For instance if the patient only preferred female providers for pregnancy? How is that preference included or addressed in prenatal care? Or if your patient requires a blood transfusion but refuses? What did you learn about a specific culture regarding practices /beliefs regarding pregnancy? Is your opinion that women share common beliefs/bonds regarding childbearing? Would you have any suggestions for enhancing prenatal care to women? Discuss how you will provide culturally appropriate care to her support team/family?
