I. What do you think the "undeserving deserve"? Describe an ethical prison. What would it look like? How would prisoners live? What would be their daily regimen? If you were a state commissioner of corrections and could design your own prison system, what would it be like? Could you sell your ideal system to the governor and to the public?
II. Is there any place for chain gangs or other harsh measures in an ethical prison? Why or why not?
III. A 51-year-old prisoner has 10 years remaining on his sentence. He is neither terminal nor incapacitated but his health is starting to deteriorate. Risk analysis puts him at extremely low likelihood of committing a new crime if released from prison. Releasing him would save the state more than $60,000 a year, that is, more than $600,000 over 10 years (a very conservative estimate of savings). Should the state keep him in prison to achieve retribution and deterrence OR should the state release him to save $600,000 that could be put to other uses?
IV. Should women prisoners be treated exactly like male prisoners? Would equal treatment be advantageous for female prisoners? Discuss.
V. Is it desirable for a state to contract out its prison operations to a private correctional company? What are the ethical considerations in doing so?
