Transitioning to electronic health records has been a costly. Electronic health records were mandated for health providers and acute care hospitals in 2009. This also prompted a variety of EHR vendor and software solutions. Competition, multiple computer and programming languages, amongst other differences have compounded issues around interoperability. The intent of ARRA was to deliver an EHR that was accessible during the point of care, regardless of your location. If systems cannot communicate there is a lack of interoperability. COVID19 has demonstrated the importance of sharing information and has highlighted many of the barriers effecting health information exchange.
