1. Analyze the Proposition: Examine whether all the key terms of the proposition have been defined, and the proposition makes a clear and assertive statement that something is/isn’t, was/wasn’t, will be/won’t be. Should the Proposition contain appropriate Qualifiers?
2. Identify the Stock Issues: Identify the main claims that the author must make in order to persuade the audience to accept the proposition. Then check to see whether the author has, indeed, made those claims.
3. Examine the Evidence: Examine the argument closely to see whether the claims have been supported with adequate and relevant evidence.
4. Examine the Reasoning: Examine the argument closely to see whether the reasoning that links each claim to the evidence provided is sound and appropriate. Should the author have made the Warrant and Backing explicit?
5. Examine the Argument for Rebuttals: Has the author anticipated possible objections to her/his arguments and suitably refuted them through Denial or Extenuation?
6. Overall Judgment: Based on the above analysis and evaluation, do you think this Factual Argument should be accepted? Partially accepted? Rejected?
