Why psychological fitness crucial for a counselors presence

Before starting a session with a client, I will be sure to practice self-reflection and make myself very familiar with the client's intake papers and personal needs. Self-reflection is an important aspect of being a counselor, as it helps in eliminating any bias that would prevent expressing empathy and understanding for the client. To be fully present in sessions and feel prepared, I would review any past session notes or intake papers that will be informative on the client's current state. Familiarizing myself beforehand would help with staying engaged and fully understanding the client's needs. Both of these strategies are related to GCU's "Statement of Integration of Faith and Work" (n.d.). in that counselors should create a caring and compassionate environment for someone in need.

Psychological fitness is crucial for a counselor's presence because it shows an ability to accept and understand new viewpoints that are not their own. By being psychologically fit as the counselor, the client will likely feel more respected and grounded when discussing concerns during sessions. If the counselor presents a lack empathy and physical fitness, the client may assume they are lacking in understanding, are not genuine, or are not being as respectful as they should (Egan & Reese, 2019).
