Why parent unsure of their role during iep meetings


Problem:

Parents can often feel overwhelmed or unsure of their role during IEP meetings, especially when they walk into a room filled with other people they may not know to discuss their child. To help make the environment more comfortable, I greet parents warmly, introduce them to each team member along with their role so they feel supportive rather than intimidated. I will also provide families with a clear outline of what will take place during the IEP meeting, so they know what to expect. Sharing information ahead of time helps families feel more prepared and confident to participate (Arizona Department of Education, n.d.). I will also provide a draft of the IEP beforehand in order for them to process the information and encourage parents to ask questions or clarification beforehand, so they are prepared.

During the meeting, I explain each section of the IEP in a family friendly way, including why it is being discussed, and regularly ask for feedback to ensure parents feel heard. It is also helpful when going over their child's present levels or result, to explain where their child stands, what areas and what could be causing them to have a low score, and also strategies that will assist them in working on those skills. These practices support meaningful parent participation, which is essential because parents are equal members of the IEP team (Rothstein, 2021)
