Problem:
Three positive coping skills I currently practice are naming the emotion, checking the facts, and cognitive reframing. These skills help me stay aware of my thoughts and reactions instead of letting stress build up unchecked.
Naming the emotion helps bring what I am feeling to the surface and gives it attention instead of letting it sit in the background unconsciously. When emotions are not acknowledged they can build and come out in ways that are not productive. By identifying the emotion, I can better understand what is actually going on and respond more intentionally. Research supports this showing that "when you put feelings into words, the prefrontal cortex switches on, while the amygdala quiets down." This means that simply naming what I feel can actually calm my brain and reduce my stress response. I've found that this coping skill really helps me to respond intentionally which is a goal of mine (Miller, 2021)
Checking the facts works well for me because it allows me to step back and evaluate the situation objectively. When I take the time to look at the actual facts, it helps me determine how I should proceed. Sometimes it validates how I am feeling, but other times it helps me recognize that I may be reacting based on assumptions rather than reality. This helps me reset and stay grounded.
Lastly, I use cognitive reframing to challenge negative thoughts. When I actively question those thoughts and look at the situation from a different perspective, it helps me avoid getting stuck in a negative mindset. This allows me to think more clearly and respond in a more productive and controlled way. Cognitive reframing works by reassessing a situation and replacing irrational beliefs with more realistic and positive thoughts, which helps change how stress is perceived. By doing this, it can reduce the overall stress response in the body because changing perception decreases stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system and lowers the release of stress hormones. This technique also helps me identify when I am falling into patterns like overgeneralizing or using "should" statements, which allows me to correct my thinking and stay grounded in reality (Halter, 2022, p. 163).
Based on the answer of the student above based on the question provided, using the simplest sentence structure in your own words that a freshman high school student can easily understand in two paragraphs with 120 words each, comment/reaction to the answer of the student. Based on your comment/reaction, please indicate two reference books, such as NIH, CDC, DOH or in APA format that will justify your comment. Make a nice comment in the first sentence.
