Why painted cave important activity for prehistoric human

Problem: We have learned some of the ways that people painted cave surfaces, the tools and techniques that they used, etc. I'd like you to contemplate a different question, similar to the Woman of Willendorf thread. First, of course, there is the WHY. Why was this an important activity for prehistoric humans, when so much of their time was absorbed in survival. Secondly, what do you think they mean? The why and the what might be closely related. Could they mean the same thing universally, or do you think different caves had different meanings and purposes? Think, for example, of the rhinoceros paintings at Chauvet Cave. Are those woolly rhinos or African rhinos? If they are African, what might that mean? Again, there are no wrong answers here, so have fun!
