While there are a few different types of implantable devices that can be used when someone is deaf or hard of hearing, a cochlear implant is one the more well known types of implants. When a patient's hearing loss is severe enough that it does not benefit from amplification, one of the treatment options available is often a cochlear implant. There is great controversy surrounding cochlear implants within the Deaf community. Begin by watching the movie Sound and Fury.
Then, respond to the following questions:
a) Explain why one parent may decide to implant during childhood and another might wait for the child to become old enough to make an informed decision.
b) If your child was born with a profound hearing loss and would not benefit from hearing aids, would you choose to implant your child? Why or why not?
