Why might a writer feel compelled to write about literature

Assignment

Prepare: Prior to writing your initial post, read Chapters 1 through 3 of Journey into Literature.

Reflect Icon

Reflect: As we explored in the "Why Read Literature?" discussion, literature can provide us with a multitude of perspectives, ideas, and experiences. Additionally, there is a long tradition of critical reading and writing about literature (i.e., analyzing literature to seek a deeper understanding about various interests and concerns). Chapter 2 focuses on these ideas. Consider why people write and how that writing may benefit us.

Write Icon

Write: Your initial post should be at least 200 words in length. The minimum word count does not include references. In your post, answer the following questions:

•Why might a writer feel compelled to write about literature? How does it benefit us personally and/or professionally?

•What kind of writing and thinking skills do you hope that you will develop in this course based on the description of writing about literature in Sections 1.1, 2.1, and 2.3 of the text?

•Incorporate readings found in Chapters 1 through 3 to help illustrate the points you make.

Discuss Icon Respond to Peers: Respond to at least two of your classmate's initial posts. Each response should be at least 75 words in length and should address two or more of the following points:

•Do you agree with your classmates' perspectives? Why, or why not? Be specific.

•Ask a specific question to encourage further discussion on the topic.

•Challenge your classmates' interpretation of literature and/or point of view.

•Do a small amount of research and share what you learn with your peers about the topic discussed in this post.

Response 1: Samantha Salomon

Why might the writer feel compelled to write about literature? How does it benefit us personally and/or professionally?

They feel compelled to write about literature because they either feel they have a connection to to the piece of writing they are writing about or it can be that they have something to show the world through there eyes that others might not understand until the writer puts it all down on paper. It can benefits us personally or professionally because any of the information can either guide us or show us the way to what we need to do with a better understanding on how to get there with the help of words that can mean so many things to each of us.

What kind of writing and thinking do you hope that you will develop in this course based on the description of writing about literature in Sections 1.1, 2.1, and 2.3 of the text?

I want to be able understand the everything without having to look everything I am reading or writing. To me this is the most interesting class because I am able to open my mind with the help of what i am reading to better understand everything. Some how everything we read is like what we see in the real world you read to understand what is going on around you and much more so i hope to gain much more knowledge on everything i am doing.

Response 2: Benjamin Sedley

Why might a writer feel compelled to write about literature? How does it benefit us personally and/or professionally?

The writer might feel compelled to write a piece of literature because of a personal connection to the piece, it may add to the proof of a piece of writing they may be writing about, or they may be writing a paper to better explain or explore what the piece of literature is trying to convey. This can benefit us personally and professionally by the writer writing a much-cleared picture of what the piece of literature is about or how that piece has had impact in history or using it for such things as educational purposes such a Clugston has done to give us this text book to learn about literature. The Inclusion of "The Red Hat" video Clugston explains why he used this piece in his book.

What kind of writing and thinking skills do you hope that you will develop in this course based on the description of writing about literature in Sections 1.1, 2.1, and 2.3 of the text?

I am hoping I can use the connecting, considering and concluding methods to be able to look at a piece of literature and better understand it and how I can use it when writing about it. I like to write short stories in my free time especially if I am having an exhausting day. It allows me to let my imagination to wander and express what I am feeling. Keeping a journal is good to but I like the perspective of expressing myself through story telling. "Whether you are aware of it or not, the lens through which you envision a story is filtered by insights you have gained from family traditions, religious beliefs, and critical life issues. Thus, interpretations of a story vary based on the reader's age, breadth of experience, and emotional connection. Likewise, interpretations differ from culture to culture" (Clugston 2014 sec 3.1).
