Assignment

Length: 1,000 words.

Marijuana has long been the subject of legal and cultural debates. Several states have decided to legalize marijuana for medical and recreational use. Advocates in favor of legalization argue that it is a state's right to regulate marijuana. The US Constitution speaks to the enumerated powers of the federal government and those reserved for the states. The Holder memo defined the Obama administration approach to the legalization debate. However, the Trump administration has a taken different approach. Legislation introduce in the House of Representatives would remove marijuana from the its classification as a Schedule 1 drug.

Why is marijuana a federal crime? Think about the policy reasons that might be taken into consideration when resolving the conflict between federal authority and state's rights. What is the Constitutional basis for federal government oversight of marijuana?
