Why is linux security in general a concern

Problem

I have been using Kali for a few months through TryHackMe.com, learning the benefits of its tools for pentesting, etc... I was told to never install Kali bare metal to only use it in a VM environment, due to Kali or any version of Linux not being secure for a daily use. Not only that, but I honestly assumed since Linux was open source it is a safe distribution, though I also know being open source, black hats could use it to an advantage. (I have heard of Kernel exploits and Dirty Cred, but never read into...)

My question: Why is Linux security in general a concern? Can you explain a good example of possible vulnerabilities of Linux?
