Discussion Post 1: Social Penetration Theory
Discuss the portions or proposals of this chapter that you agree and disagree with.
Potential discussion points:
o What if it wasn't the onion theory? How the explanations about self-disclosure and relational development would be different with a different fruit or vegetable? Give an example (e.g. avocado, corn, potato, broccoli, etc.)
o Does "instant intimacy" exist?
o What's at the core of your onion?
o Once you have breached a topic or topical area, is it always possible to revisit that area? Or revisit it easily? What if you hit on something sensitive or taboo, then what?
Discussion Pos2: Uncertainty Reduction Theory
Discuss the portions or proposals of this chapter that you agree and disagree with.
Potential discussion points:
o Why do you want to know your partner?
o What causes you the most amount of uncertainty- not being able to explain a partner (current tense) or not being able to predict (future tense)?
o Do we have any choice or are we just propelled to reduce uncertainty?
o Knowing you cannot trade certainty for uncertainty once it's been reduced, are there times when you would prefer to preserve the unknown?
o When starting a new job or taking a class from an unknown professor how each type of uncertainty reduction strategy may be used to gather more information in the same situation? Explain when each type of strategy may be more/less useful, and more/less appropriate.
Discussion Post 3: Media Multiplexity Theory
Discuss the portions or proposals of this chapter that you agree and disagree with.
Potential discussion points:
o In what circumstances might a strong tie rely on few media, or a weak tie rely on many?
o What is your favorite form of communication? Why do you prefer that channel?
o How would your relationship with your partner or best friend change if you didn't see each other face-to-face? Or didn't text? Or didn't have social media available?
o Do you talk about the same things regardless of channel or vary your conversation depending on how you're talking?
