Woodrow Wilson narrowly won re-election in 1916, riding on the campaign slogan "He Kept Us Out of War." While this is often taken to mean the First World War, it really applied to the border clashes with Mexico. Why did the U.S. become involved in the Mexican Civil War in the first place? Why did the U.S. Army launch a punitive expedition into Mexico? Why did they fail in their goals? Was Wilson right to withdraw Gen. Pershing's forces? How did lingering tensions with Mexico help to bring America into WWI by 1917?
