Why client welfare should be priority

Problem:

As a student, how will you respond to this classmate of yours below, include in-text citation, references and ask questions

Honestly, I think this would be uncomfortable situation for Darla. As a practicum student she might feel like she doesn't have much power anyway, but if several clients who were seeing Mike are consistently asking to work with Darla and sharing concerns with Darla she should pay attention. Ultimately client welfare should be priority. The ACA Code of Ethics directs, "Counselors have a responsibility to address ethical violations of colleagues. When counselors have knowledge that another counselor has committed an ethical violation, they attempt to first resolve the issue informally with the counselor if feasible, provided such action does not violate confidentiality rights that may be involved" (American Counseling Association [ACA], 2014, I.2.a). Darla should reflect on her observations, document patterns, and decide if speaking to Mike about her concerns is warranted. Since they are both supervisees Darla may want to take her concerns to the site supervisor if client harm is occurring or could occur. If the supervisor fails to take action, then it is a more serious situation. The ACA goes on to say, "If an apparent violation has substantially harmed or is likely to substantially harm a person or organization and is not appropriate for informal resolution or is not resolved properly, counselors take further action appropriate to the situation" (ACA, 2014, I.2.b). Ultimately Darla's ethical responsibility lies with her clients first- even if taking further action makes her uncomfortable. Need Assignment Help?
