1. Analyze the provisions of the Compromise of 1850. What were the main provisions? Who benefited and who suffered from the compromise? In what sense did it fail to resolve the issue, and in what ways did it intensify the argument during the next decade?
2. Explain why the South lost and North won the Civil War. Discuss three of the following issues in your explanation: war goals, economic strengths and weaknesses, public finance, military and naval strengths and weaknesses, relations with the rest of the world, and political systems.
