The purpose of this homework is for you to apply what you learned about sociology concepts, methods and perspectives during learning activities. Use this reading and discussions and your personal experiences to inform your answers.
Consider the two themes of the Sociology Matters box below:
Sociology matters because it explains the purposes and functions of our most basic social institutions.
1) Do you see the institutions of the family and religion differently now that you have read this chapter? Did anything you learned surprise you?
2) The family and religion are two social institutions whose authority has declined over the last century. Why do you think they have lost some of their importance? Do you think our society is weaker or stronger as a result?
Sociology matters because it helps us to look at familiar social institutions from new and different perspectives.
1) Which of the four major perspectives on the family strikes you as the most meaningful? Why?
2) Which of the four major perspectives would be most helpful to you in studying religion?
Write 700 words essay that shows how sociology matters in helping to explain your chosen topic. Be sure to demonstrate your understanding of this week's readings by correctly applying Key Terms related to your selected topic and supporting your answers with appropriate examples from the course readings or your personal experience.
Organize your essay in paragraphs with introduction, body, and conclusion sections.
Quoted and paraphrased material should be less than 30 percent of your paper.
