When evaluating the purpose statement in Wilhelmy et al. (2016), I think it is clear, focused, and well aligned with what we learned in the Purpose Statement Checklist. The authors explicitly state that their aim is to develop a conceptual model explaining how and why interviewers use impression management. This clearly communicates the intent of the study and reflects a qualitative approach using grounded theory. It also focuses on a single phenomenon, interviewer impression management, which is consistent with expectations for qualitative purpose statements (Walden University, 2016).

What stands out to me most is how well the purpose connects to the research problem. Wilhelmy et al. (2016) identify a clear gap in the literature, specifically the lack of a conceptual model from the interviewer's perspective. Their purpose directly addresses that gap by aiming to build a taxonomy and deeper understanding of interviewer behaviors. The study is also grounded in signaling theory, which provides a strong theoretical lens for explaining how interviewers communicate information to applicants. Because of this, the alignment between the problem, theory, and purpose feels very intentional and cohesive. This kind of alignment is critical because it ensures the study is logically structured and meaningful (Babbie, 2017; Burkholder et al., 2020).

In terms of the checklist, the purpose statement includes most key elements, such as intent, approach, and participants. One area that could be slightly stronger is explicitly identifying the research site within the purpose statement itself, even though it is described later in the study (Walden University, 2016).

My view on research and social change is that they are deeply connected, even when the link is not immediately obvious. Wilhelmy et al. (2016) may be considered applied research, but the implications are significant. Understanding interviewer behavior can improve hiring practices, reduce bias, and create more transparent organizational processes. Over time, that can impact individuals, workplaces, and broader systems. I see research as planting seeds. What we study and publish today can shape real world change in ways that continue to unfold.
