1. There are many other factors that are important when conducting a genogram. Some of these factors include health conditions and mental health or substance abuse history. Additionally, information could be included about living arrangements, including who lives in the household, their roles, conflicts, significant events or major changes in life and when they occurred. In this particular video, the extended family was mentioned but was not added. If they had been added, information such as birthdates, ages, deceased/living, immigration patterns and experience, religion and race are important. One last piece that would be important is a key to describe what the symbols and lines signify. 2. As clinicians, a hesitation that we experience is self-doubt and anxiety. Much of these hesitations stem from a lack of practice and lack of experience completing genogram with clients. There is pressure (which may be coming from ourselves) to have memorized each and everything that could be included in the genogram.
3. Bowenian Family Therapy directs focus to how a family system functions as a whole. Structural Family Therapy could be a complementary theory to use in conjunction, as it could provide techniques on how to restructure boundaries and hierarchies within families, after some long-standing dysfunctional generational dynamics are uncovered. Emotionally Focused Therapy could also pair well, as it can help members work emotional connection, attachment issues and emotional reactivity.
