Assignment:
Purpose:
This assignment asks you to really think about systemic racism and where and when it occurs. Then, evaluate what the repercussions of it are on other social institutions, such as healthcare, education, and the criminal justice system. Finally, it asks you to reflect on what you think this means for the everyday lives of everyone involved. This does not only include racial and ethnic minorities, but also the "dominant group". Write an academic paper in which you examine instances of systemic racism in American society. The best papers usually focus on one specific example, such as less healthcare access provided to African American/black females, and then the repercussions of this are discussed in other social institutions. . . such as what impact this has on the group's education.
Please do not select this example for your paper and create your own.
Paper Requirement:
Your paper should address the following components:
Introduction:
Presents what you will discuss in the paper. This is where you should introduce your specific example and explain what you will write about in your paper
Identify and explain the specific example with citations
This should start the body of your paper and discuss the specific example you've selected. For example, what does it look like, where and when does it occur, against who, and how does it happen. Discuss repercussions.
Evaluate how this affects experiences in other social institutions
In this area, you should identify how the previously mentioned example and its repercussions affect other areas of group members' lives. For example, if your example was based on healthcare, in this area you would discuss education and economic status. Please select two.
Reflect on what you think this looks like for the everyday person.
Explain what you think this looks like for the group you have discussed and for the dominant group.
Provide examples of what this looks like - e.g., physically, emotionally, financially, etc.
Close your paper with how this makes you feel - really reflect on the emotions that you get from this.
Guidelines:
Write in Standard Academic English. Academic writing in the social sciences prioritizes clarity, accessible language, and directness. Rather than trying to "sound" fancy with complex words, focus on writing clearly, being specific in your examples. See the rubric for details on point deductions for grammar, spelling, punctuation, or formatting.
This paper is expected to be a minimum of three full pages of writing and no more than four full pages. If you're shorter than that, you almost certainly have not answered the questions in full.
Use standard academic formatting - 12-point Times New Roman or equivalent font, double-spaced pages, 1" margins, with the first line of each paragraph indented.
Use what you've practiced in this module to demonstrate using evidence to support your claims and citing your sources. If you are doing a direct quote, be sure to include the specific locator like paragraph number or page number. All papers must include a reference page and a title page.
