In this class, I have learned the importance of being an active citizen. Before this class, I felt that being an active citizen was unimportant, bad, and dangerous. I thought that being involved in protests, having civil discourse, or aiding in any part of social change that didn't involve simply voting, would unnecessarily put me in danger or make people angry. I realize now that change is something that needs to happen to make a more just and equal society. There are things that are worth fighting for and nothing will change if we don't make it.
In my community, to help further the women's rights movement, there could be more education on issues that are currently existing, like how in many modern families, women are expected to do housework, take care of children, and work, while men simply work. There should also be mentorship programs for women to help support women who are trying to advance or start a career. There are many women who did not receive an education, were stay at home moms, or are simply trying to enter into a career field that may be difficult to get into. Mentorship programs would help women to succeed and gain support with their careers.
