Carla is thirteen years old. She was adopted from Haiti at the age of eight. Years later, she still struggles with reading and often goes to the resource room for extra help. She receives passing grades in her 7th grade English class, but several of her class peers brag about their grades to her. She is afraid to discuss her grades with these people who do much better than her and often refuses to answer when asked.
