Xavier demonstrates average to above average cognitive skills in this evaluation. Weaknesses are seen in phonological memory and rapid naming. Accompanying academic weaknesses include reading, writing, and math computation. The IEP team will review all pertinent data to determine whether or not Xavier is a child with a disability who, by reason thereof, needs special education and related services.

- Timed reading. Use a stop watch or stove-top buzzer and chart progress over a week with respect to one passage; or calculate the reading rate (number of words X 60,divided by the total number of minutes), and then set goals (e.g., a goal of 75 to 85words per minute).
Tape-recorded books (for "follow-along" in tandem reading) are useful but monitoring is often needed to ensure that the student is following along.
