When discussing the topic of ROI, or release of information, it is important to know your facility's policies surrounding ROI, to whom the information is going, why it needs to be released, and the manner by which it is released. If I were in a supervisory position, I would ensure my team was trained thoroughly in our processes when a patient, or entity, requests medical information to be released. Many facilities require all information requests to be sent to the medical records department to be handled by their team of highly trained employees who better understand the legalities of releasing medical information. I know within the facility I am employed at, if a patient comes in requesting their medical notes and information, I am required to have them fill out a Release of Information form, but have to tell the patient they need to reach out to our medical records department before any information can be sent out. Ensuring they fill out the ROI form ahead of time speeds up the process for the records department, and keeps myself and my teammates safe from any legal ramifications regarding the patient's information.
