History of Art - Byzantium and Early Middle Ages
Using your textbook, the library, the Unit Resources, and the Internet, familiarize yourself the following:
- The Hagia Sophia, Istanbul, Turkey
- Ravenna, Italy (including but not limited to Saint Apollinaire, San Vitale)
- Cathedral/Mosque Cordoba, Spain
- Dura-Europas Synagogue, Syria
After you have familiarized yourself with each building, select the one that most inspires you and answer the following questions.
1. When was the work created?
2. What was the original purpose of the building?
3. Has the purpose changed over time? How?
Why is the building considered a work of art? Include 2 or 3 specific examples from the building.
