The social issue | chose is Civil Rights. Civil Rights are the principles that ensure everyone, regardless of their background, is treated reasonably and protected under the law, regardless of characteristics such as race, religion, or sex. In my sociological imagination, civil rights shape society by providing equal opportunity rights to people of color, allowing them access to public spaces, education, housing, food, the right to vote, and employment without facing discrimination within the community. According to the Article Social Justice: Quarter of U.S. Concerned About Civil Rights, "Civil rights peaked in the United States in early 2021, the share of respondents identifying it as an important issue for the country quickly dropped again - back to 2019 levels as of Q4 2021 and Q1 2022; Civil rights can be a personal issue when a person from a different background or race faces challenges in employment rejection, finding the right institution for education, owning a house, and securing a mortgage, among other problems. At the same time, civil rights can be a public issue when the majority of people who fall into different backgrounds have to deal with the government, America's policies, segregation, not having the right to vote, and facing discrimination in the workplace.
