Problem:
The Serial Position Curve illustrates how people tend to remember items at the beginning and end of a list rather than the items in the middle. With the primacy effect, items at the beginning of a list are often remembered better because they have less interference from subsequent items. In one of the videos, the speaker notes, "you'll start to see is what you see it's already started dropping off", which is indicating that recall diminishes for items presented later (Memory: Forgetting Curve and Serial Position Effect, n.d.). The recency effects happens when items at the end of a list are remembered because they are still fresh in working memory, however, if there is a delay or distraction that happens after the list it presented the effect can diminish due to interference from other cognitive tasks or information. The items in the middle do suffer the most from interference, when participants are asked to recall a list, they may struggle with middle items because they have been overshadowed by a stronger recall of the first and last items (Memory: Forgetting Curve and Serial Position Effect, n.d.). To improve my memory for material that is presented in the middle of the semester, there are many strategies that can enhance memory retention such as active learning techniques, chunking information, using mindfulness techniques, and spaced repetition.
