There are a few ways to measure visual perception. The first one mentioned in the textbook is the computational approach. In this approach, researchers examine how the environment might be interpreted using various cues in the stimuli. There is also the Gestalt approach. In this one, researchers have examined how we might comprehend what we see in our surroundings by using organizational principles of the world. Lastly, another method is the perception-action approach. In this approach, researchers aim to understand the objectives of action accomplished by more direct perception (McBride & Cutting, 2018). Some things to consider when testing for visual perception are the nature of the visual stimuli, bottom-up and top-down processing, participant factors (like age), attention, and the cognitive load.
Through visual perception testing, we can understand the different stages of perception and detect strengths and weaknesses by finding any changes in each stage. Also, we can find strengths and weaknesses in perception through measuring speed and efficiency, as well as highlighting sensitivity to specific features. Some strengths in visual perception can help us navigate busy intersections while driving, or crowded rooms, but weaknesses can also cause those environments to become dangerous if we have impaired perception. Even subtle strengths or weaknesses in visual processing can ripple across daily life.
