Many cultures have rituals that are essential for a member to undergo in order to become a man or a woman. These rites of passage are frequently painful, but necessary for one to be considered fully a man or a woman. These rituals seem more obvious when viewed in non-western(European) cultures.
Men in certain groups require solo hunts of Lions, have scarification of the body to resemble crocodiles, be suspended by their flesh, or wear mittens woven with stinging bullet ants.
Women in certain groups require extensive facial tattooing, the extension of ears or mouths with large disks, training as warriors.
• What seems to be the purpose of these Rituals? Are there similar rituals in American society?
