The table below presents the actual sick leave guidelines of Scuttlebutt Marine (not its real name) an Ottawa-area marina (i.e., a place that sells and repairs boats). Imagine that you are a freelance management consultant in the Ottawa area, and the marina's owner has asked you to look at some of his employee benefits policies to see if they can be improved. As part of this process, you peruse the table below. (Seasonal employees only work during the summer, but some may be hired back year after year.)
i. What principle of distributive justice does Scuttlebutt's sick leave policy seem to be based upon? Why do you think that?
ii. The applicability of any principle of distributive justice depends in part on the context. Do you think that the principle you identified in (i) is appropriate in the context of a sick leave policy? Why or why not?
iii. What other principle(s) of distributive justice do you think you might apply to improve Scuttlebutt's sick leave policy? What would a sick leave table (like the one above) based on that principle of distributive justice look like?
iv. Identify some other types of organizational systems or policies where it might make sense to apply the principle of distributive justice you identified in (i).
