Architects must be employed by builders in commercially marketed systems because many customers are unwilling to sponsor long-term development; they purchase systems after evaluating the finished product according to their then-perceived needs. But placing the architect in the builder's organization will tend to dilute the independence needed by the architect. What organizational approaches can help to maintain independence while also meeting the needs of the builder organization?
