What makes it morally permissible to have used your resource

Problem

Think of a time in the past year when you invested resources that were available to you (money, time, etc.) in something that was 'just for you'--some end that was aimed exclusively at your own benefit. Presumably, you could have used the resources to instead help relieve the suffering of others, but you didn't. If pressed to justify this to yourself or others, how would you? What, in your view, makes it morally permissible to have used your resources for yourself rather than relieve the suffering of others?
