Learned there are a great number of factors which contribute to communication--both verbal and nonverbal. This can include certain slang phrases, facial expressions, and physical gestures. Also important to consider is the use of space during interpersonal interactions--known as proxemics. These different forms of communication are important to know when working within a diverse cultural environment--and in living within our global community. Imagine traveling to a foreign country and meeting a business associate for the first time; you reach out to shake his hand and everyone looks at you as if you have committed an offensive gesture. In their culture it is not customary to shake hands--they give a respectful bow instead. This is an example of the importance of learning cultural diversity.
For this discussion, you will design a study to examine people's reactions to norm violations of any nonverbal behavior.
Make sure you address each of the following:
1) Where will your study take place?
2) What is the population and culture you would use in your study?
3) What is the specific nonverbal behavior you are researching?
4) How you will design your study to measure people's reactions?
