Naive T-cell activation, proliferation, and effector cell differentiation occur over several days and result in highly specialized effector T cells. For example, the T-cell response generated to an intracellular bacterial infection in the lung is distinctly different from the response to an extracellular bacterial infection in that same tissue. What is the major feature that contributes to effector T-cell specialization?
