Raj is climbing Mount Elbert, in Colorado. As she ascends, her kidneys sense the lack of oxygen and determine that the level is low, so they also produce a hormone called erythropoietin (EPO). This hormone travels through the blood and signals her hematopoietic stem cells to increase the production of red blood cells, this increase delivers more oxygen to her tissues, thus reducing the lack of oxygen.
