Describe how most solutes are transported across the plasma

Problem

Describe the levels of structural hierarchy for the human body, starting with the chemical level and ending with the complete organism. Make sure you define and provide examples for each level. In addition, you should make sure you link each level to the previous level, emphasizing the structural relationships. Does each organ system have the ability to function completely on its own or does it rely on the activity of other organ systems to be fully functional? Explain.

I. Describe how Most solutes are transported across the plasma membrane of a cell, either passively or actively. In your own words, describe the major differences and/or similarities between passive and active transport. Make sure you include simple vs facilitated processes when describing passive mechanisms. Is there a relationship between the structure of the plasma membrane and the characteristics of a solute in determining what process allows it to move across the membrane? Make sure you include examples to support your statement.

II. Describe the general location and characteristics of epithelial tissues vs connective tissues. Make sure you explain how epithelial tissues are classified and the meaning of the two part names of epithelial tissues. Include structural characteristics of the cells and extracellular matrix in describing the tissues and where appropriate, explain how structure is related to function. Provide an example of an epithelium and an example of a connective tissue. Why do epithelial tissues usually rely on the presence of an underlying connective tissue?
