Imagine two young Englishmen meeting on a dock in 1630. One, John Green, is taking his family to join a Puritan community in New England; the other, Robert Brown, has signed up to be an indentured servant in Virginia. Write an essay that explores the experiences each of these men is likely to have in British North America. Why is each leaving England? What is each hoping to achieve in North America? How will the societies they are joining differ from each other? Now, imagine they meet up again seventy years later to compare their experiences. What events have these men lived through? How have their societies changed? Have the realities of the past seventy years (1630-1700) lived up to their expectations?
