Assignment 1: Honeywell and the Great Recession (A) & (B)
Case questions include:
1. Skim the background section on Honeywell's history and the turnaround led by Dave cote from 2002-2008 (pp.1-8). What do you think went wrong with the way the management team handled the 2001 recession? How was Cote able to achieve Honeywell's turnaround? What was at stake for Honeywell during the Great Recession? What do you think Cote was most concerned could go wrong?
2. What are the responsibilities of Dave Cote and Honeywell to investors and employees during the recession?
3. Which should Honeywell use - layoffs or furloughs - if it needs to make employee reductions as part of its recession response? Please refer to the two notes for background on layoffs and furloughs to help you formulate your response. Be specific: how would you implement the policy you recommend?
4. Which, if any, of the additional employee hiring, compensation and benefit adjustments should Honeywell NOT make to reduce workforce-related costs? Why those and not the others?
5. If you were the CEO of Honeywell, would you accept a bonus for 2009? Why or why not?
Assignment 2: Toyota Australia in Peril
Case questions include:
1. What factors are affecting the profitability of Toyota Australia? Which side of the market are they related to? Which of these factors can the company control to improve profitability? What strategies would you suggest to improve profitability?
2. What is the market structure face by Toyota Australia? What challenges does this market structure pose for the company?
3. Is Toyota Australia operating at the optimal scale of operation? Should Toyota expand or contract its scale of operation? What are the associated implications? Support your answer with a diagrammatic presentation.
4. What is the minimum efficient scale of operation for car manufacturers globally? Depict it diagrammatically. What are the implications of a minimum efficient scale of operations for the automotive market structure and for Toyota?
5. What should Toyota do? Should it wait for demand and cost conditions to improve, or should it exit the market?
Assignment 3: Chemical Plant Site Selection
Case questions include:
1. Who are the key stakeholders in the site selection? What are their objectives?
2. What is Allied's objective in conducting the community meetings?
3. As David Stevens, what is your primary objective? How should he incorporate the different stakeholder perspectives in Allied's site selection decision?
