What is a security?

The Securities are claims on financial assets.  They can be explained as "claim checks" that give their owners the right to obtain funds in the future.  Securities are traded in both the capital and money markets. Money market securities include negotiable certificates of deposit, Treasury bills, commercial paper, and banker's acceptances. Capital market securities include stock and bonds.
