What is a phony and why does Holden think everyone is one? What attribute of humans is Holden looking for as he focuses on everyone's phoniness? What would people have to be in order to not be phony? In what ways is Holden phony? Analyze the characters in the novel (including Holden) and discuss the idea of phony and what it means to the world and to the individuals when people live phony lives.
