Community Mobilization

Review at least three of the following videos that share stories of communities that have mobilized to make change:

a) Bill Moyers Journal: Santa Ana Health Crusade
b) Greening The Ghetto
c) Strong Threads: Stories of Justice from the Laotian Organizing Project (Click here for video transcript )
d) The Sunset High Student Organizing Committee: A Youth Leadership Success Story (Click here for video transcript )
e) Where We Live: The Changing Face of Climate Activism (Click here for video transcript )

Select one of the above stories to use as the basis for this assignment (you are encouraged to use the same one you chose for this week's discussion). For this assignment, you will map the community's needs and assets, determine how they proceeded through the community organizing process, and consider how you could work with the community to continue the momentum to make change. You may choose to do this assignment as a written paper or as a screencast presentation. In either a five to seven page written paper or an approximately 10 minute presentation:

1) Analyze the needs and assets of the community. You are encouraged to locate additional resources that describe the community to help you fully "paint a picture" of it.

2) Create a community needs map and a community assets map (two separate maps). Use this week's readings and the textbook (specifically, Figures 9.3 and 9.4 in the textbook and the McKnight & Kretzmann article) to help guide you.

3) Interpret the community needs map and community assets map. Questions to consider:

a. What is included on each map and why did you include it?
b. What particular strengths and challenges does the community have?
c. What appears to be the most critical health issues the community is facing?
d. Which strengths could be leveraged to work on critical health issues?

4) Compare and contrast the community's mobilization efforts to Figure 9.2 in your course text, which provides a summary of the steps involved in community organizing and building. Questions to consider:

a. What did the community's mobilization efforts entail?
b. What did the community do (or perhaps not do) in relation to each step?

5) Based on the community's work so far and the maps you created, assess how your work with the community could proceed. Questions to consider:

a. What health issues could most effectively be addressed?
b. How could the community apply the needs and assets maps?
c. Where should the community go from here?
d. How should you (in your role as a representative from the health department) be involved in the community's future mobilization efforts?

Format your homework according to the give formatting requirements:

1. The answer must be double spaced, typed, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides.

2. The response also includes a cover page containing the title of the homework, the course title, the student's name, and the date. The cover page is not included in the required page length.

3. Also include a reference page. The references and Citations should follow APA format. The reference page is not included in the required page length.
