GUIDELINES FOR PAPER
The purpose of the exercise is to encourage the utilization and development of "critical thinking skills in assessing the position or racial/ethnic minorities in society. You should use pertinent outside sources (eg. newspaper articles, books, research articles, films, television programs) and integrate them with information and issues presented in the class. The paper should be original, informative, and provide a critical analysis and interpretation of a relevant. It must topic be 6
FULLY PAGES,Times New Roman Font and Double Spaced. The paper should include the following:
1- Introduction and goals: What is the issue or question (s)? Why is this an important issue or question? What is the goal of your paper? What question or questions do you seek to answer?
Example 1:What has been the impact of the 1986 Immigration Bill on the US economy? What has been its impact on the Chicano/ Latino community?
Example 2:What are some of the most prevalent racial stereotypes of black people? How are these stereotypes perpetuated by the mass media? What is the impact of these stereotypes? (The same topic could be used with any of the fourmajor racial/ethnic minority groups)
2- Method and Evidence: Explain how you propose to answer the major question or questions that you are addressing. What evidence will you be presenting? What are the limitations of the evidence? (Saying that you believe something to be true is not sufficient. You have to document your position). The evidence may be from within the class (text, lectures, videos/films, speakers, or note the I provide to you on the attachment) or outside supplementary materials.
3- Findings/Conclusions: This is the answer (s) to the question, issue, or problem that you raised in the introduction to the paper.
4- Critical Evaluation/Implications: What did you learn from this exercise? What are the major implications of this issue or question? How does your paper enhance our understanding of racism and the experiences of racial and ethnic groups in society?
Criteria for Evaluation:
1. Originality/creativity
2. Documentation
3. Ability to synthesize and integrate evidence
4. Clarity of presentation
5. Ability to integrate and apply class materials (information, concepts)
