Perform the following demonstration, and answer the bold questions:

i. You need three cups of water: one hot, one room temperature, and one cold; line them up left to right in that order.

ii. Touch the water in each cup with the tip of a finger to verify the temperature of each.

iii. Put your left index finger into the hot water, and your right index finger into the cold water.

iv. Leave your fingers in the cups for at least 30 seconds. What happens to the sensation in each finger as time passes?

v. After at least 30 seconds, quickly move both of your index fingers into the room-temperature water in the middle.

vi. What does the water in this cup feel like? Does each finger experience the same thing? Why (not)?
