What ethical issues and standards apply

Problem: It is your job to make sure that all codes are assigned by 5:00 PM each day so that bills get dropped within three days of a patient's discharge. You know you will be reprimanded if this does not occur. You have already had written warnings and have been told that if you had one more chart not coded within the time frame that you will be dismissed. One patient that you must get coded today had an expected reimbursement of approximately $54,000.00. It is the third day post discharge and it still hasn't been coded. As you prepare to code it, you receive a call that the ER needs the chart because the patient has just arrived by ambulance. The chart is delivered to ER. The patient ends up being admitted to the nursing unit and you still cannot code the chart. As 5:00 approaches you realize you still had not coded the medical record. The nursing unit states that the physician is reviewing the chart and that you cannot have it at this time. How do you handle this? What ethical issues and standards apply in this situation?
