I. The opening of the film begins with an extreme close-up of a man telling a story about how his daughter had been attacked. As he tells his story, the camera slowly pulls back to reveal Don Corleone. Watch this scene again and pay attention to the lighting. Where is the light coming from? How does the lighting influence the scene? Then, notice how the dramatic difference in lighting when the next scene begins at the wedding. Now, skip to the last scene of the film and see what parallels you can find.

II. Watch scene 1.10 where Michael Corleone kills the Police Chief and Sollozzo in the restaurant. Explain how sound is used in this scene. Where else in the film do you find sound use in particularly compelling ways?

III. What elements or motifs do you see repeated over and over in the film? What might they lend to the film?

IV. Scene 1.21 is the baptism scene near the end of the film. Notice how this scene is edited. What do you see in this scene? Carefully take apart this scene and point out how it works. Look at the sounds and music, the action of what's happening, and the words spoken, etc. What does this scene tell us about the transformation Michael Corleone has gone through?

V. What historical references are in the film? Why might they be worth noticing? How does the mise-en-scene give credibility?

VI. This is a long film with a complicated narrative and many characters. What is the overall structure of this narrative? What are the key turning points in this film?

VII. What message does this film send about the role of men? Women? Marriage? Religion? Violence? Honor? Respect? How are those messages constructed?
