The media (news, TV shows, and movies) often portray juvenile offenders as being "rebels without a cause" and belonging to violent gangs committing murder, rape, and robbery at the age of 12. This portrayal, some argue, has contributed to the public's perception and desire for more get tough laws, including transferring or waiving more juvenile cases into the adult court system. Some argue that the public perception of juvenile offenders is biased, inaccurate, and may lead to many unintended consequences, including undermining the traditionally important philosophical reasons for treating juveniles differently from adults.
